What Expert Organizations Say

The two most-referenced organizations on this topic are the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Both have reached similar conclusions:

Why the First Two Years Are So Critical

During the first two years, the brain builds its neural connections through rich, multisensory real-world experiences — touch, sound, smell, taste, and vision. Screens are an incomplete stimulus in this context: they provide visual and auditory input but lack the tactile, kinesthetic, and social dimensions.

Research shows that heavy screen exposure in the early years can delay language development. Part of the reason is that every minute spent with a screen replaces time that could have been spent in face-to-face interaction — the kind that drives language growth.

Content Quality Matters as Much as Time

Not just "how long" but "what is being watched" is critical. Educational, slow-paced content that repeats and encourages active participation (like Sesame Street) produces very different effects than fast-paced, high-stimulation content (action cartoons, short-form videos).

Practical Age Guide

0–18 months: No screens except video calls. The best "screen" for a baby is your face.

18–24 months: 15–20 minutes per day, high-quality content, watch together and talk about it.

2–3 years: Maximum 30–60 minutes per day. Choose content, stay nearby while they watch.

3–5 years: Up to 1 hour per day. Active play before and after screen time.

6+ years: Set family rules together. Sleep, homework, and family time come first.
