What counts as normal in the first weeks
- Day 1: 1+ wet diaper, 1+ stool (meconium — black, tarry).
- Day 2–3: 2–4 wet diapers; stools turning brown-green.
- Day 4–5: 4–6 wet diapers; stools yellow, seedy (breastfed) or pasty (formula).
- Day 6+ and weeks 1–4: 6+ wet diapers/day, 3+ stools/day (breastfed; fewer is OK for formula).
- Feeds: 8–12 in 24 hours in the first weeks. By 4 weeks, more rhythm and longer night stretches start.
If output drops below these ranges, your baby is hard to wake for feeds, or you are worried — call your pediatrician.

Call your pediatrician if…
- Fewer than 6 wet diapers a day after the first week.
- No stool for 24 hours in a breastfed baby under 6 weeks (older babies can normally skip days).
- Dry mouth, sunken soft spot, no tears, or unusual sleepiness.
- Persistent vomiting, blood in stool, or any concern that doesn't sit right.
