A generated schedule is a starting shape for the day, not a timetable to enforce. Real days shift with short naps, teething and outings — the useful part is the order and the spacing, not the exact minute.
How the Day Changes Shape Through the First Two Years
Two things move at once as a baby grows: the awake stretches get longer and the naps get fewer. Three naps at 4–6 months become two by around 7 months, and two become one somewhere between 13 and 18 months — with the first nap shortening for weeks before it finally disappears.
Total daytime sleep falls as that happens, from around 3.5 hours at 4–6 months to roughly 2.5 hours by 9 months and 1.5–2 hours once a single nap is left. If the schedule below leaves your baby much further from those figures than usual, the nap lengths are the part to adjust first.
Frequently Asked Questions
My baby will not fall asleep at the times this suggests. What now?
Shift the whole day rather than one nap. If the first nap is consistently a fight 20 minutes early, the awake stretch before it is probably too short for your baby, and every later slot inherits that error. Move the first nap 15 minutes later and let the rest of the day follow.
What if a nap is much shorter than the plan?
Shorten the wake window that follows it. A 30-minute nap does not buy the same awake stretch that a 90-minute one does, so the next sleep needs to come earlier than the schedule says — often by about half the sleep that was missed.
Should I wake my baby to keep the schedule?
Sometimes, and mostly at the end of the day. Capping the last nap is the usual way to protect a bedtime that keeps drifting later. Waking from the first nap of the day is rarely worth it, because the morning nap is the one most babies most need.
